Chippewa learns Fetch!
The past week I have been adding some retrieve training into Chippewa’s five minute lessons. He has shown strong interest in the retrieve but with a fierce game of keep away. This is a common thing with pups because it’s so much fun to possess the object they captured. We do not want to diminish that feeling in the dog at all. I like to try to shape things as positive as I can by incorporating the retrieve into the Fetch command upon the dog grabbing the dummy. Using the long leash helps steer the dog back to the handler, where the pup receives tons of earned praise and if desirable some food reward. It took a few lessons for Chippewa to feel he that it was positive for him to come to me with his prize but he is starting to realize it’s all positive.
